European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
